Trying to establish a healthier lifestyle but can' Trying to establish a healthier lifestyle but can't figure out why you can't get motivated no matter how much you try to summon your inner drill sergent? One reason is that you might be missing the inner safety that must come first.

The Amygdala of the brain is our "primitive" part responsible for reflexes that will keep us safe from predators. The Prefrontal Cortex is the part of our brain (CEO) that is capable of analyzing situations in a rational way for our long-term benefits.

If you are hypervigilant or lack a sense of safety or security, your mind is preoccupied with the need to reach out for the quickest way to keep you safe. So if you grew up without a secure attachment, with caregivers neglecting your bid for soothing and comforting touch or words, your brain became wired in such a way that your Amgydala is overactive and alert, and the CEO takes a back seat.

One thing many of us resort to when we can't get the emotional soothing and security that we need is to reach out for food that's calorie-dense and sweet. It raises the level of our happy hormones and seemingly fills the void in our soul. But this gives us only a short burst of satisfaction and a false sense of safety. Then we need go back to it over and over whenever life's stresses upset our nervous system.

This is why it's so important to attend to this insatiable need for safety (which is not your fault but just how your brain was wired as a child). As adults, we actually have a chance to reparent ourselves and learn to develop our Prefrontal Cortex so we can have a greater sense of safety inside. Then we will free up our energy to do all the things that we (or the Prefrontal Cortex) know we need to do in order to be healthy in the long run.

How to reparent ourselves? I'm working on it myself too and am getting help from @debblum. Join me in building inner safety: https://bit.ly/WholeSoulWay-LW

Happy Sunday! Happy May 1! Happy International La Happy Sunday! Happy May 1! Happy International Labor Day!

At the beginning of this Mental Health Awareness Month, I'd like to share with you a passage by one of my favorite writers and teachers, Jeff Brown:

"The glorification of busy will destroy us. Without space for healing, without time for reflection, without an opportunity to surrender, we risk a complete disconnect from the authentic self. We burn out on the fuels of wilfulness, and eventually cannot find our way back to center. And when we lose contact with our core, we are ripe for the picking by the unconscious media and other market forces. After all, consumerism preys on the uncentered. The farther we are from our intuitive knowing, the more easily manipulated we are. The more likely we are to make decisions and affix to goals that don’t serve our healing and transformation. To combat this, we have to form the conscious intention to prioritize our inner life. To notice our breath, our bodies, our feelings. To step back from the fires of overwhelm and remember ourselves. It may feel counter-intuitive in a culture that is speed-addicted, but the slower we move, the faster our return home."

Happy Easter / Happy Passover / Ramadan Mubarak to Happy Easter / Happy Passover / Ramadan Mubarak to those of you who celebrate! Also, to our friends in Southest Asia--Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand--Happy New Year!

The past few months have been extremely tough... and I don't need to remind you how the global and domestic events that unfolded during this time have put us all under stress. Despite the unsettling situations in the world right now, there is still much to celebrate if we look around and look closer.

Here on the East Coach of America, we're entering a new period of growth as we emerge from a winter that not only felt a little too long but eractic. The sights of daffodils and cherry blossoms, which seem to have popped up overnight, make me feel a buzz of joy and hope.

No matter what your cultural and religious tradition is, let's cherish today as a symbolic day of rebirth. Let's never stop growing and becoming the best version of ourselves, and living to our fullest potential.

Core strength is so important for us to build and Core strength is so important for us to build and maintain as it helps us to stay balanced, use the proper muscles when we move and carry heavy things, and prevent injuries. All of these are non-negotiable as our body advance in age. For post-menopausal women, it's especially important to maintain our active muscle mass and bone strength. Regular movements that include core training is thus a crucial part of our well being. Try these exercises to build your balance and core strength.

Remember, safety first. If you are not in the habit of doing exercises, start slowly, address your pain issues first and consult your physician before you start.

Today I want to talk about a certain aspect of bui Today I want to talk about a certain aspect of building healthy habits. Oftentimes we hear about the tactical strategies of how to squeeze in some time to make sure it's easy for us to stick to those healthy habits such as doing meal prep, etc. However, how often does "life happens" and you're thrown a curve ball? When stressors in your life are about to throw you off track, how do you remind yourself to go back on track? In this video, I'll give you a prompt to help you do that. I can't wait to hear your answers!

When we are emotionally uncomfortable or distresse When we are emotionally uncomfortable or distressed, we may want to avoid feeling those emotions. Sometimes we even want to numb those emotions so we don't have to feel or face them. But we usually do this unconsciously.

Some of us like to use delay or avoidance strategies in order not to face those uncomfortable feelings. One strategy is to reach out to "comfort food" and to snack on it mindlessly. The snack serves as a "pacifier."

You see, cravings are symptoms of deeper issues. Of course, there are other physiological reasons for cravings and I'll be talking about them in the future. But today, we're talking about the emotional underpinnings of cravings.

To stop the cravings, we have to start with the uncomfortable or painful emotions, the stres or distress that lie underneath the surface.

Only by leaning in and dealing with these underlying issues can we truly move forward to build a healthy relationship with food. This is my approach when working with clients. The goal is to reveal the unconcious thought patterns and rewire the brain so that the unconcious ostacles blocking them from forming healthy habits can be removed. Only then will new and healthy food choices be able to stick for the long haul.

Do you use food and drinks as an emotional crutch? What are the uncomfortable emotions that you often deal with? Share below.

I love training the Progressing Ballet Technique. I love training the Progressing Ballet Technique. It strengthens my core while building my muscle memory for specific ballet movements. I wish I had learned this when I first started learning ballet as an adult at the age of 35. But nothing is too late if you start applying a new knowledge and make it into a habit. The body responds to positive stress from exercise and can get stronger despite the conventional thinking that our body degenerates rapidly as we advance in age. The right type of training and diet can actually slow down and even reverse the biological signs of aging. My own body is proof. I feel so much healthier and stronger in my body than 20 years ago. It's never too late to start taking care of your health.

I want to live in a world where parenting and educ I want to live in a world where parenting and education embrace emotional resilience so that food is no longer used as emotional crutches or pacifiers.

This is a belief that I have formed over the course of my life. After having struggled with emotional "weakness" and using food as a pacifier in the first 3 decades of my life, I have finally learned to not rely on food to self-soothe. Food is something that nourishes me and gives me pleasure, and I don't rely on "cheats" or "guilty pleasures" to lift me up when I'm blue or anxious. I have found many ways to self-soothe and process my uncomfortable emotions. However, we are seldom taught or modeled on how to handle and process uncomfortable emotions like anxiety, insecurity, fear and so on in our upbringing and in school.

According to psychological studies based on attachment theory, about half of the population in the U.S. did not grow up with secure bonding with their caregivers. As as result, these kids grew up having to emotionally fend for themselves. And in many cases, particularly among girls, we use food as a tool to gain control of our chaotic life, both inner and outer. The dieting culture and the increasing social media culture feed into this insecurity and resulted in disordered eating patterns.

So many women I have talked with and coached have gone through such a pattern and feel devastated by the yo-yo dieting experience. I'm passionate about helping them overcome their unfortunate "wiring" by introducing sustainable healthy eating habits and mindset.

My vision is that the next generation of women do not fall pray to this trap anymore and can live their life enjoying healthy food without fear, guilt and shame. To achieve that, we can play a role to model healthy behavior, and to provide a safe space for children to express their emotions. Will you join me in creating this world?

I hate the cliché "You can't teach an old dog a n I hate the cliché "You can't teach an old dog a new trick." Why? Because we're not old dogs 😅, and besides, scientists have found more and more evidence that our brain possesses neuroplasticity. That means we can learn "new tricks" no matter our age! What prevents us from learning new tricks are certain long-held beliefs and habits developed in childhood. They may prevent us from getting the results we want to achieve, such as good health, well-being and fulfillment. Why did we develop them? Often, they are a result of how we coped with stressful situations and relationships with our caregivers in our formative years. Therefore, it is critical that we re-program our brains with a new "operating system" that works better for us as adults. I work with my VIP clients in a tailor-made way that opens up new perspectives and new ways of learning for them, so they can start to build new healthy habits without feeling being forced to do things against their unique personality--such as one-size-fits-all approaches used by so many weight-loss and fitness programs.

♥️ If you're a midlife woman and interested in working with me one on one to get unstuck from your yo-yo dieting or unsuccessful weight loss and fitness attempts, please DM me to discuss. I have availability for one VIP client starting mid-May.

Today is International Women's Day. Let's celebrat Today is International Women's Day. Let's celebrate this special day, sisters!

What does it mean to you personally?

It's a challenge to find the right balance of food It's a challenge to find the right balance of food that's healthy for your unique body and follow healthy routines day after day. But it's so much harder when nobody around you understands what you're doing and worse still, if everyone in your social circle makes you feel there is something wrong with the way you eat.

I have felt this way for over a decade. Ever since I started eating according to my blood type and genetics attributes, I've gotten a ton of skeptical ridicules and disapprovals, judgmental comments and looks--you name it. But I ignored every single one of such comments and looks because deep down, I knew I was doing the right thing for myself. Now, a dozen years later, I am proud of myself for following through with my unique kind of diet that still not many people in my life understand or appreciate. They do see the effects on my health, how fit and young I look compared with people of my age. Well, to me that's not a vanity thing. It's just something I do as part of my own self-care and for my long-term well-being.

I do dream of a world where each of us can choose our own "food culture" without peer, family or social pressure to conform. I call it "food culture" because it is a conscious way to move away from the "diet culture," which I do not wish to take part in and don't advocate for my clients either. The diet culture involves so much deprivation that isn't condusive to sutainable weight loss and health. In fact, it messes people up, sometimes with detrimental effects because it created yo-yo dieters who become hopeless about keeping their weight off and not having to worry about an extra calorie here and there.

The word "diet" itself just means how we eat, but too bad it has been associated with dieting. So instead of using this word, I choose "food culture." Just like each country has its own food culture, why can't individuals create their unique food culture? How do you like this idea? What is your unique food culture? I'd love to hear!
"What do YOU want?" was a question that my therapi "What do YOU want?" was a question that my therapist asked me recently. I was surprised I did not have a ready answer for such a simple question. In my search for an answer, I discovered the thought patterns that I followed by default, and how that habit got me into a position that compromised my happiness.

This question has a lot to do with the topics we covered over the past couple of months--the stories that we tell ourselves, putting ourselves first, having more courage. And, it has everything to do with self-care and self-love. Yes, with each decision you make, and each conversation you have, it can either move you closer to or farther away from have your needs met... one is a choice you make out of self love, while the other is one you make ouf of self-sacrifice or neglect.
